The Sequoia partner retakes No. 1 after two years with a portfolio bookended by a 2020 IPO in its last year of eligibility — Airbnb — and one of 2024’s few newer offerings — Reddit. Lin also gets a boost from ChatGPT maker OpenAI, where he played a role in returning CEO Sam Altman to power after a brief coup attempt in 2023.<br/><br/>The AI unicorn, recently valued at $86 billion, helps 7 investors onto Midas overall. They include early backer Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures, who moves up a whopping 76 slots to No. 9 on this year’s list. To qualify, investors are ranked by portfolio companies that have gone public or been acquired for at least $200 million in the past five years, or that have at least doubled their private valuation to $400 million or more over the same period. Forbes and TrueBridge allow firms to share credit for a deal between up to two investors, and put a premium on liquid exits over unrealized returns. Early stage investors who deliver large multiples on money invested, and later-stage investors who return large sums of cash, can both make the list. When Shaboozey was writing “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” he wanted to keep the arrangements sounding as organic as possible. He built the track around J-Kwon’s 2004 hit “Tipsy,” and within an hour, he had his very own ode to raising a glass — with a country twist. The megahit quickly went viral and topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, surpassing “Texas Hold ’Em” by Beyoncé. (Shaboozey had actually teamed up with her for two songs on her recent country LP, Cowboy Carter.) Together, they became the first two Black artists to lead that chart back-to-back.<br/><br/>The Influences <br/><br/>Around the time that he wrote the song, Shaboozey had been listening to a lot of music by artists like Zach Bryan and the Lumineers. But although he was inspired by their stripped-back acoustics, he was also channeling hip-hop heavyweights like Pharrell Williams for the four-to-the-floor instrumental breakdown. (And of course, he wanted to pay homage to J-Kwon’s knack for partying.) “Some people said it reminds them of [Oasis’] ‘Wonderwall,’ ” Shaboozey says. “I don’t hear it.”<br/><br/>All Together Now<br/><br/>In the same way that J-Kwon captured the essence of the club on “Tipsy,” Shaboozey wanted his song to channel the liveliness of a packed dive bar. Shaboozey achieved the stomp-and-shout elements of the single by bringing in friends to layer on vocals. “We love incorporating gang vocals and all our friends singing things,” the Nigerian American musician says. “I think the more energy and the more people you put on a song, the more it’s felt.” He adds that because he was working with producers Nevin Sastry and Sean Cook, the studio “definitely turned into a party by the end of the song, which is a good sign.”

A black bear who had ventured into a Salt Lake City neighborhood from the nearby mountains took a 15-foot tumble from a tree Wednesday morning after it was tranquilized by wildlife officials, who were unable to provide it a soft landing.The 2-year-old male black bear perched above the tree-lined streets at the base of Utah's Capitol Hill took a hard fall onto the road below but survived. The state's Division of Wildlife Resources released the bear later Wednesday into a more ideal habitat in the mountains after the agency said it passed multiple health evaluations.The young bear's urban adventure was cut short after wildlife officials shot it with tranquilizer darts, causing it to slip and fall on its climb down the tree, spokesperson Scott Root said. They had been working to set up a bucket truck beneath the tree to break its fall but could not secure it in time.Crews loaded the bear into a tube-like cage, administered a fast-acting drug to reverse the effects of the tranquilizers and tagged its ear to track its location.Residents had gathered just a few blocks north of downtown to watch officials capture the animal, and many winced as it hit the ground. Bears are resilient creatures and have recovered from falls in the few past instances where local officials were unable to catch them, Root said.Black bears — the only bear species found in Utah — typically come out of hibernation in mid-March, but they are rarely spotted in the capital city despite its close proximity to the mountains, he said.The bear, Root said, could have been searching for food and water away from the dry foothills or was pushed out of its territory by a larger male bear.
